SUMMARY:Cultural Arts & Book Series: Christopher Gorham
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 22\, 2026\n2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. \nBethany Village\nThe Village Center/Serr Grand Room\n6443 Bethany Village Drive\nDayton\, OH 45459 \nIn partnership with Bethany Village and Jewish Family Services of Greater Dayton \nChristopher C. Gorham\nMatisse at War: Art and Resistance in Nazi Occupied France\n\nChristopher Gorham\, a lawyer\, an educator and acclaimed author of The Confidante\, has written a book about a lesser-known segment of the life of Henri Matisse. Rather than focusing on his earlier Fauvist or postwar paintings\, Gorham delves into Matisse’s wartime creativity and moral resolve. After a number of personal crises such as surgery\, the dissolution of his 42-year marriage\, and the departure of many of his friends in the artistic and intellectual community\, Matisse decided to stay in France. This had horrendous consequences for him and his family. His daughter Marguerite was arrested\, tortured\, and deported to Ravensbrück but escaped when Allied bombing halted her transport. Two of his other children worked in the resistance movement. Through the horrors of war\, Matisse continued to produce works of art even though they were condemned by the Nazis. He experimented with paper cuts and collage techniques and produced works such as The Fall of Icarus\, and the much-lauded book\, Jazz. \nYour kind donation of colored pencils and adult coloring books benefits Bethany Village residents living in long-term care and assisted living communities. Please bring your donation to the event. Thank you! \nNo cost. \nQuestions? Contact Stacy Emoff at semoff@jfgd.net.

SUMMARY:Temple Beth Or Event ~ Roy Lichtenstein: His Art\, His Life\, and His Jewish Roots
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 24\, 2026\n6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \nTemple Beth Or\n5275 Marshall Road\nDayton\, OH 45429 \nPresented by Dr. Carol Salus\, Kent State University\n\nThe Adult Education Committee is delighted to welcome Dr. Carol Salus for a fascinating presentation on the life and work of renowned artist Roy Lichtenstein. The presentation will take place in Levin Hall. \nDr. Salus will open the evening by exploring several of Lichtenstein’s iconic pieces\, along with his works inspired by masters such as Monet\, Van Gogh\, Picasso\, and Matisse. Her perspective is uniquely personal—Carol’s family was close with the Lichtensteins\, and Roy even painted her portrait when she was a child. The presentation will also highlight Lichtenstein’s deep connection to Israel. He was a supporter of a two‑state solution\, and his commissioned mural for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art reflects that hope. The mural incorporates references to his own creations as well as works from the museum’s collection. Lichtenstein later produced prints of the mural to help raise funds for the museum. \nThe evening concludes with a look at Roy’s sculpture in the Garden of Dan in Jerusalem\, donated in memory of Yitzhak Rabin. \nLight refreshments will be served beginning at 6:00 p.m. \nNo cost. RSVP by March 22. \nClick here to RSVP.
