CABF Opening Night: Kosher Gospel with Joshua Nelson

7 October 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free – $18.00

You may have never heard of “kosher gospel” music before, but the inspirational performances of Joshua Nelson, the creator of this style, will surely call out to your soul.  Gospel music is rooted musically, culturally and historically in the Spiritual which was created by enslaved Africans on North American plantations as a tool for and commentary on issues of social injustice. The term “gospel,” a Greek word meaning good news, is usually associated with African American Christian churches. Joshua Nelson marries Jewish religious lyrics and meanings with the soulful sounds of African American gospel performance practices to create Kosher gospel. These same sounds have been retained in the musical cultures of Black African Muslims and Jews, and such soul-inflected vocalizations filled the Black Hebrew synagogue Joshua Nelson attended as a child with his family. Joining us will be the Dayton Jewish Chorale and the University of Dayton Ebony Heritage Singers.

There will be a light dessert reception prior to the event.

$18 in advance, $25 at the door
