Foundation's Heuman Scholarship Announces 2015 Recipient

The Jewish Foundation of Greater Dayton is the philanthropic agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton. It offers not only donors the ability to leave behind a legacy and support all kinds of causes they love locally and across the world, it also gives the community a resource to grow and thrive through grants and scholarships. These opportunities are a direct reflection of 100 Days of Tikkun Olam in our Dayton Jewish community.

Every summer, the Jewish Foundation of Greater Dayton names their annual recipient of the Heuman Scholariship. Local teen Erica Abrams has been named as this year’s recipient of the Heuman Scholarship. Erica will be a senior this fall at Miami University in Oxford, where she is an Early Childhood Education major. In addition, she is working toward a minor in Community Based Leadership. Having always enjoyed working with children, Erica hopes to one day teach kindergarten or first grade. Erica said “I believe children have so much to offer and I want to be able to provide them with opportunities to share what they know and to challenge them to learn more. I not only want to help children learn how to read and write, but I want to help them become people with good character so one day they can give back to their community.”

Erica keeps busy on campus, both in class and outside of class. She served as the 2013-2014 membership development chair for the sorority Delta Delta Delta. This past year she served as student president for Hillel. In addition, Erica is a camp counselor this year for our very own Camp Shalom. Erica is the daughter of Gary & Andrea Abrams, and a member of Temple Beth Or. Mazel Tov Erica!

» THE HEUMAN SCHOLARSHIP IS MADE POSSIBLE through a fund established by Bob and Vicky Heuman. Since its creation in 2006, the Heuman Scholarship has been awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates both academic achievement and financial need. The scholarship is open to Jewish Dayton area residents. Applications are accepted from January through March. The award is announced in May.

The Foundation’s philanthropic efforts are another way the Jewish Federation helps to create space for Tikkun Olam here in Dayton, Ohio. Help us continue to make a difference in people’s lives by pledging to the Annual Campaign today. Contact Alisa Thomas at athomas@jfgd.net or 610-1796 today.

Supporting Israel

This week has been very difficult for Jews around the world, especially in Israel. People with friends and family in Israel are trying their best to keep in touch with their loved ones, and act as a source of strength during this difficult time. We here at the Federation have been keeping abreast of the situation through webinars provided by Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), and through contact with our friends in our Partnership2Gether (P2G) area and Dayton’s sister city of Holon. When an Iranian missile strike hit Holon, we wanted to make sure citizens in the city knew...

Local Leaders Express Views on Antisemitism

Since October 7th, figuring out how we, as Jews, feel about the global Jewish community and the rise in antisemitism here in the United States has been increasingly difficult to articulate. It is important that the Jewish community’s concerns regarding antisemitism be shared not just within our own community, but also with the community-at-large. Last Sunday, the Dayton Daily News published opinion pieces from three Jewish community leaders ~ Jeff Blumer (Jewish Community Relations Council Director), Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz (Senior Rabbi at Temple Israel) and Rabbi Judy Chessin (Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth Or) ~ each brilliantly capturing their views...

Eighty Years Later

As we prepare to remember and honor those who perished and survived during the Holocaust, we must not forget the stories of the Liberators. At this Sunday’s Yom Hashoah Observance, we will hear from Elaine Buckler, who will share the story of her father, Paul Buckler, who participated in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp on April 29, 1945. I was fortunate enough to hear another liberator’s story earlier this week, when I attended the 45th Annual Governor’s Holocaust Commemoration. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine shared the story of his father, who participated in the liberation of Dachau as part of...
