It is hard to believe that we are approaching the two-year anniversary of 10/7. I don’t think anyone could have imagined the impact it would continue to have on our lives and our world.
Since that tragic day, a number of films focusing on 10/7 and the subsequent months have been released. Over the July 4th holiday, I previewed many of these films. I was looking for subject matter that told the story of 10/7 and its effect in different ways. Some films featured personal accounts of 10/7. Others gave a glimpse into its aftermath. Some gave me hope and provided tools on how to move forward.
I realized our community needed an opportunity to see these movies ~ together. Thanks to a grant from the Esther and DeNeal Feldman Jewish Experience Fund, we have been able to create a free three-part documentary series, called Israel in Focus. Each film gives a unique perspective of how 10/7 has impacted Israel and Jews throughout the world. Following each screening, we invite participants to engage in open, meaningful conversation with fellow community members and special guests.
Israel in Focus begins this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Boonshoft CJCE with October 7: Voices of Pain, Hope and Heroism. October 7 is an inspiring documentary and shares powerful personal stories of loss, courage, and resilience from Israeli families impacted by the October 7 attacks. When I previewed this film, I was left feeling emotional, yet hopeful. It is not too late to RSVP.
The second film, October 8, will be shown on Thursday, September 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boonshoft CJCE. October 8 is a gripping expose on rising antisemitism in America since 10/7. The film spotlights student activism, social media, and the Jewish student experience on U.S. campuses. Afterwards, local Jewish students will join us for a panel discussion about their personal experiences.
The third film, Torn, will be shown on Thursday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boonshoft CJCE. This film gives a thought-provoking look at how NYC streets became a battleground over “KIDNAPPED” posters. It explores identity, empathy, and freedom of expression post 10/7.
I truly believe this film series is a great opportunity to gather with other community members and express our respective opinions in a safe environment. I hope to see you there.
